Work in the oil industry requires us to regularly change work location. For every six
weeks’ work in the field, we are permitted three weeks’ home base duty. The work in the oil fields necessitates long journeys to distant areas where, because of the extreme heat, we remain for a maximum of 10 days. It is enormously difficult to maintain the fast during these short but inimical trips.
I have not been able to fast in the month of Ramadan during these journeys, what should I do?

Allah tells us in the Holy Qur’an 2:184–5 that travellers are not required to fast while they
journey, but are required to complete compensatory – qadha – fasts in the future for those days of fasting that they missed. The situation you describe entitles you to break your fast when you do not remain at a site for 10 days but travel to a nearby town before the tenth day. You should take care not to break the fast in public because you have to honour and respect Ramadan.
